The Comparison
Paint is essentially a solid* – –
it’s the part that stays on the building.
We have 49% solids by volume (+/- 3%) so that’s about half of the product you are purchasing. The other part of our product are the liquids which are used to spread the solids evenly across your substrate. Compare our “solids by volume” to other products on the market and you’ll see and notice the difference. Essentially, the greater the solids (by volume), the greater the wet film thickness (WFT) and therefore the greater the dry film thickness (DFT). Know and feel comfortable that you are receiving this high-build, 100% acrylic product, engineered for high performance protection in three (3) bases: pastel, deep and accent.
Liquid Ceramic®
5.0 Mils Dry Film Thickness (DFT) after one coat that is applied correctly.
ONE COAT equals up to 4 Coats of some competitors!
Sherwin-William’s Duration®
2.0 Mils Dry Film Thickness (DFT)
PPG PORTER® Acri-Shield®
1.4 Mils Dry Film Thickness (DFT)
Glidden® Speed-Cote®
1.2 Mils Dry Film Thickness (DFT)
When asked “How important is the percent of solids by volume in an exterior paint or coating?” A technical staff member from the Rohm & Haas Paint Quality Institute gave us a great explanation and summarized it with this:
“Folks purchase paint by the gallon, and think of the price as $/gallon. But a better way might be to understand the price per solid (or “dry”) gallon. In summary, dry film thickness is the key application variable, and volume solids is a main factor impacting dry film thickness.”
As you can see in the graph above, with a good quality, exterior paint, 35% of it stays on the building. And with a superior quality paint, such as Sherwin-William’s Duration®, 40% stays on the building. The rest floats away in the air by the time the paint dries. Compare those two paints to Liquid Ceramic® High Performance Exterior Architectural Coating. An amazing 49%* stays on the building. This means with our low spread rate and high volume solids, it will take some paint products up to FOUR coats to equal the dry film thickness of one coat of Liquid Ceramic®.
*Our pastel base is actually tested at 49% in volume solids (+/- 3%). This amount can vary due to the natural resins used in manufacturing this unique product. Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating is also available in deep and accent bases and each of those bases have a slightly smaller amount of volume solids.
